An HF card has to touch the reader. A UHF card reads from metres away, which is what makes walk-through and drive-through access possible.
The most common use of this band is turning the staff badge into the parking permit as well. The choice between Impinj, Alien and NXP chips comes down to the range you need and the readers already installed.
